Tom, 14 mths old, Collie, 22kg
Fostered in Christchurch.
Tom was with his last owner for 6 months but showed no interest in being a working dog. He was good with deer, calves, cows, sheep and chickens.
Tom is a very sweet and loveable dog who tries hard to be a good boy. Looking for a kind, experienced carer with the time and patience to settle him in. He tends towards being nervous and startles easily, but is gaining confidence. He will really blossom with a family that can help continue to support him, build his trust and security, and teach him the skills he needs to navigate this world.
He needs daily physical/mental stimulation, if he has had 2 runs at the park, then he is happy to relax at home (he is not super high energy). He is very affectionate. Walks nicely on a leash, has great recall, otherwise hasn’t had much training. However, he is very smart and will pick things up quickly with a patient and understanding owner that is willing to work within his comfort levels.
Cat tested – Initially a bit unsure, then relaxed very quickly and was calm, polite and respectful around a confident cat, a calm adult male dog, and 4 & 7 year old kids. He would likely be fine living with a cat, and dog-savvy kids (ideally over 5) if given sufficient time, space and grace to adjust.
Lives with a senior male dog with no issues and has mixed well with other dogs he has met at the park. He is a little wary of unfamiliar people but just leaves them a wide berth. If he gets to meet/greet people properly then he is friendly and fine.
Tom has separation anxiety (which we are working on). His new family will need to provide daytime human company and be willing to work on this issue with him so he learns to be okay when by himself. He just needs to gain more confidence and trust while he figures everything out.
