POLLY
*** UPDATE – I think I’ve responded to everyone that have sent us messages…. apologies if you have been missed! We have been absolutely swamped with interest in Polly. We have a couple meeting her this weekend, and we have also sent out a few application forms. We really want to stress that Polly is a stocky (and strong at times) 13kg Staffy mix, (not a little lap dog as many expect), she arrived with some behavioural habits that she needed help with (full on and on lead barking/pulling hard towards new dogs and exciting things) – she is fostered with a behaviourist – so has been in excellent hands, BUT will need her new carers to continue on with this good work. We will update this post again in the weekend, but for now we are not taking anymore enquiries. Thank you very much! ***
Just before lockdown last year, we got an 8 week old brindle wire haired pup in, he was the last of his litter to go. His Mum is a Staffy, Dad a Bichon mix. Pup found a great home. We think Polly is a littermate, similar nature, looks, weight and bandy wee legs.
Polly came to us from a Pound about 3 weeks ago, she had been found wandering, filthy and dragging a chain. She was unsure at first, and then super full on! Polly is thriving in foster care in Christchurch with all the good handling and routine.
Polly is a sturdy 13kg, 14 months old, Staffy/Bichon mix. Very affectionate, loves cuddles and being with her people as much as possible. Will always greet you with a toy in her mouth and a lot of kisses. She is not phased by my two boisterous and noisy young boys and will seek out their company. She can get a bit excited and mouthy at times, but is easily redirected. Can be cat tested if need be.
Doesn’t require a huge amount of exercise (two 20 minute walks a day would be sufficient), but does need plenty of human attention and interaction. She likes to play fetch and tug. Her front legs are a bit bow-legged – she is more likely to develop arthritis when she gets older – the vet has advised to keep her weight down, and restrict high-impact activities to limit this risk.
Very sociable with other dogs, loves to play but is quite rough and tumble, and could overwhelm smaller dogs that aren’t used to this. Polly knows some basic commands, and isn’t too bad on a leash (but can really pull if she wants to). She figured out toilet-training fairly quick. Will settle fine in a crate if her needs have been met, and sleeps happily in there through the night. However, she would much prefer to be free (and sleep on a bed)! Being a young dog, she needs a family that is willing to support her with management and positive reinforcement training while she learns how to be the best dog she can be.
Seeking confident handlers, who are able to appreciate and manage her endearing quirks. She has has really thrived with love, attention, stability and structure in foster care. Her ideal home would have daytime company, a dog friend that can match her energy and play style, and lots of toys for her to play with. Owner occupied home preferred. If interested please message us all about your home etc and why you think Polly would be a good match. We are getting enquiries from all over NZ, but will look locally first. Thankyou.
$250 includes spay, parvo/kennel cough vacc, chip/rego. Adoption process to match our dogs up to the home that best suits their needs. Property visit will be carried out to ensure safe containment.
